Golfer's Edge | The Fitness Advantage

Insights from a footy-head (surprising !!!)

Normally I wouldn't count on the Channel 7 Saturday Night Footy Commentary Team to be providing me with Golf Fitness Lessons ...

In all honesty, they generally do my head in ...

(Apologies to my non-Melbourne / non-AFL watching friends here, but bear with us, there is a great Golf Fitness Lesson buried below)

Brian Taylor's commentary is usually of the "just tell you exactly what you can see for yourself on the screen variety" ...

I even heard him 'make up' a statistic on Saturday night.

Cameron Ling is excellent (of course I would say that being a Cats fan) ...

And Richo and Darce ...? Well, probably an E for effort.

But it all changed on Saturday night. I have new found respect for the INSIGHTS of Mathew Richardson ...

Discussing Core Strength, Richo said something like:

"...All the players are so strong through the CORE and HIPS these days. They spend so much time in the gym working on that stuff ..."

"...When I started in the 90s all we did was a few 'Beach Weights'. Lots of bench press and a few biceps curls ..."

Here is the clincher ...

"That's how they have managed to knock out Osteitis Pubis ...by improving their overall CORE strength ..."

I almost fell off my chair ...(no, I hadn't had any beers at that stage ...)

Richo had just highlighted one of the primary reasons to Assess & Develop your CORE Strength and Stability ...

To ensure that other, smaller, more at risk parts of the body do not get overworked, inflamed or seriously injured ...

^^^^ Probably worth reading those two lines again ^^^^

Remember: All Movement Emanates From The CORE Outwards.

Without stability in the CORE to initiate the movement, the ripple effect out through the body is magnified ...

I would go as far as to say that CORE Strength and Stability is even more important in a high speed, power-driven, rotational sport like golf, than it is for footballers ...

To protect: your lower back, your hips, your shoulders, and your neck ...

CORE Strength and Stability is what is required my friend.
